Queer Musicians Unite: Bimini, Tia Kofi, and More to Honor The Vivienne With Charity Single for LGBTQ+ Helpline
READ TIME: 3 MIN.
In a moving display of unity and remembrance, six prominent queer musicians have joined forces to release a charity single honoring the late James Lee Williams, known to fans worldwide as The Vivienne. The song, titled "Your Light Will Shine," will be released on September 17 and features acclaimed "Drag Race UK" performers Bimini and Tia Kofi, alongside Bentley Robles, Eden Hunter, Janethan, and renowned DJ and producer Ellis Miah.
All proceeds from the single will benefit Switchboard, the UK’s longest-running queer helpline, which celebrated its 50th anniversary last year. Switchboard provides vital support and information to queer individuals across the country, making it a fitting recipient for a project centered around community solidarity and remembrance.
The Vivienne, who captured hearts as the winner of "Drag Race UK"’s first season, passed away in January at age 32 due to a cardiac arrest resulting from the effects of ketamine. The performer was widely recognized for their charisma, humor, and unapologetic advocacy for queer rights. Friends, family, and fans alike have continued to celebrate The Vivienne’s influence both on and off the stage.
The new single was penned by Simon Jones, The Vivienne’s long-time manager and close friend, who described the project as “a celebration of Viv’s life and a call for unity within the queer community.” In a statement, Jones explained: “Viv was a trailblazer and a one off, and in this song we celebrate their life but also remind everyone that right now we need to be united as a community and fight for our love more than ever. I’m so grateful to the amazing music artists who have given their time and talent to create this beautiful pop song”.
The collaborative track is produced by Ellis Miah, known for his work with RuPaul, and is described by those involved as both “hopeful” and “stirring.” The artists’ goal is not only to honor The Vivienne’s memory but also to promote a message of love and mutual support at a time when queer communities face ongoing challenges.
Tia Kofi, a close friend and fellow "Drag Race UK" alum, shared in a recent interview that participating in the single was “incredible” and spoke of the importance of continuing The Vivienne’s work in championing inclusivity and kindness.
Switchboard’s role as the beneficiary further underscores the single’s mission. Over five decades, the helpline has provided non-judgmental listening, information, and support to hundreds of thousands of callers, making it a cornerstone of the UK’s queer support infrastructure.
The announcement of "Your Light Will Shine" has been met with an outpouring of support across social media platforms, with fans of The Vivienne, Drag Race, and the broader queer community sharing memories, tributes, and messages of solidarity. The track is already being hailed as an anthem of resilience and remembrance.
This musical tribute follows closely on the heels of the BBC’s planned documentary "Dear Viv," set for release later this month, which will further celebrate The Vivienne’s artistry, activism, and impact on British drag culture. The film will include interviews with The Vivienne’s family, friends, and other drag icons, cementing their legacy as a pioneer and mentor within the community.
Simon Jones remarked on the significance of these projects: “We hope that both the single and the documentary will inspire the next generation of LGBTQ+ people to continue fighting for equality and celebrating their authentic selves”.
