Michigan Governor Nears Verdict on Same-Sex Marriage Licenses

Michigan Gov. Rick Snyder is nearing a decision on the status of same-sex marriages conducted after a judge struck down the state's gay marriage ban but before the ruling was halted.

The Republican governor told reporters Wednesday he hopes to provide clarity "relatively soon" after consulting with lawyers. His spokeswoman says Snyder ideally could make an announcement later in the day.

A federal appeals court on Tuesday put an indefinite halt to gay marriage in Michigan while it takes a longer look at the decision overturning a 2004 ban. Hundreds of same-sex couples in four counties were married Saturday before the appeals court stepped in with a temporary stay.

Snyder says it's a "confusing circumstance" and he wants to provide additional clarity soon.
