Review: Everything (and Nothing) Matters in Compelling 'Warning'
I'm not sure what exactly to say or think about the new sci-fi film "Warning." Despite an all-star B-list cast, the film — which appears to be a disaster movie with some curious sci-fi elements — ends up being more of an art film with fascinating vignettes, but no end game.
The stories and characters are many. There's David (Thomas Jane), an astronaut working on a satellite who is the victim of an outer-space accident causing him to float alone in space, waiting to die.
There's Claire (Alice Eve), a woman dependent on a piece of technology called "God," which keeps track of her sins and tries to give her encouragement on the daily. (Sort of like a Christian Alexa.)
Then there's couple Ben (Patrick Schwarzenegger) and Anna (Kylie Bunburry), who are involved in a strange cyber memory game that is causing distress for both.
To add to the weirdness, there is Magda (Garance Mariller), an older teen who agrees to be a body surrogate for a man that wants to experience 48 hours as a woman.
Add to the mix happy couple Liam (Alex Pettyfer) and Nina (Annabelle Wallis), who go to Liam's parent's house for a first meeting only to find his family doesn't feel like their lifestyle matches Nina's.
There are a few other stories sprinkled in there, all occurring as a cataclysmic event hurtles toward the Earth, ready to end life as we know it.
So is the point of the film that everything matters and nothing matters?
I wasn't sure.
Music video director Agata Alexander has written and directed a fascinating and beautiful film with a ton of ideas that are all compelling, but ultimately don't gel. The actors are all quite good and give compelling performances, but when the film ends abruptly I wasn't sure how to feel. It seemed like everything got cut off too soon, and I wanted to know more.
But perhaps that's the message. We all have problems, interests, issues, but ultimately nature is going to determine what happens to us and nothing can really prepare us for that. So live your life the way you want, and don't worry about the rest.
Or maybe not.
"Warning" will be available on VOD October 22nd, and on Digital, Blu-ray, and DVD October 26th.
