Still On My Mind

Arriving on the pop music scene at the dawn of the 21st Century, British singer/songwriter Dido made an instant impression with her crystalline sweet sound and radio-friendly tones. Music then was transitioning, and the spectrum was wide-open to interpretation. Popular music benefitted from and promoted artists that had an original take and a penetrative influence; this was before the manufactured takeover of acts emerging from the reality show realm and competition series. Dido was in a league all of her own.

Continuing to carve her own path, almost two decades later, she's proven that as an artist she is beholden to only one constant — and that's her music. Her sound has proven unfaltering, and on her latest release, "Still on My Mind," Dido delivers on expectations with a seriously evocative setlist of hauntingly groovy tunes. The album's opener is a beautifully enthralling pop ballad; "Hurricanes" benefits from its simple production, which is appropriately centered on Dido's vocal arrangement.

The track has an ethereal electronic swoon to it that eases the listener in and wraps you around, preparing you for the experience of this electronic dreamscape. It's not all swirls and swipes of synth blips and beeps. There are gorgeously resonating piano arrangements and melodies that give grand elevation to tracks like the dreamy "Give You Up." Dido's melodies move seamlessly through each one of the album's 12 new songs. "Take You Home" has a very contemporary uptempo jolt that presents one of the setlist's more dance-ready efforts.

The album's title track is a genuinely refreshing pleasure. The lyrics are present and searing, but the music never distracting. This album, her return to the studio since her 2013 effort, also reunites Dido with her longtime producer (and brother) Rollo Armstrong. It's a pairing of pop perfection. Clearly, the siblings have an understanding of one another's strengths, and they capitalize on it. That's particularly evident on the track "Mad Love," which is among the most excitingly produced tracks on the album.

Dido has made a significantly relevant resurgence with "Still on My Mind." She's moved at her own pace and remained true to the artful vocal authenticity that made her a standout artist. "Still on My Mind" is a welcome interlude onto the pop music hemisphere that hasn't been visited by the freshness of music that has the depths and accessibility, if not the commercial fortitude, that is getting the saturation on the airwaves. This is just evidence that Dido has a place in time, and is still on our minds.
